Move over humans, it’s the dogs’ turn to brunch!
Mutts On Main in Denville – a café, retail, self-wash and grooming shop in Denville – offers a carefully curated Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., specifically just for our furry friends. The shop also has daycare and boarding locations in Montville and Warren.
“I was having some trouble with my own dogs, so I got into some training and in trying to offer the best well being for my dogs, I got into dog nutrition,” owner Nikki Lombardi told NJ Advance Media. “This inspired a whole raw, healthy diet and lifestyle for my dogs which then led me into a lot of product research and nutritional education. I just didn’t see anything in the area that was offering the stuff that I wanted to feed my dogs.”
Lombardi started offering the special Sunday brunch at the shop in early February.
The menu features more than just bones and treats. Meals include “the all American pup” with pancakes, eggs and pork jerky, “eggs bennie-biscuit” serving eggs, a pork slider and biscuit with turmeric hollandaise and finally the “chicken and woofles” highlighting gently cooked chicken on a waffle topped with manuka honey.
These meals are $20 and include a mutt-mosa – a drink made with bone broth and fresh squeezed orange juice. A yogurt paw-fait slide with seasonal fruit, yogurt and granola is also available for $10.
Lombardi says that the menu changes every month with a new special weekly. They also put seasonal twists on the meals such as adding a green frozen beef blood pudding for St. Patrick’s Day in March. Everything on the menu is safe for dogs!
After ordering, guests and their paw-rents can go to the second floor with a dedicated dining area for dogs to munch on their meals and interact with fellow pooches. There are also tables and seats on the lower level. There are no meals for humans but it is BYOB for guests to enjoy a drink while they watch their dogs chow on their food.
Upon my visit earlier this month, most dogs didn’t waste any time and were chowing down on their meals while some of the more pickier eaters were taking their time.
The employees were giving out free water to the dogs and although the floors got a little messy, they were attentive in keeping the area clean.
“We have never been to a place like this before and I think they should have more of them. Places aren’t super dog-friendly to allow them inside.” said Ashley Amodeo of Florham Park, who came here for the first time with her wheaten terrier. “Not only does Mutts On Main have food for the dogs, but to be able to hangout with them and bring them in is unique.”
My own dogs, Raf and Maple, were busy at their grand-pawrents’ house, but I made sure to bring some meals home. They didn’t leave a single crumb on their plates and ended their meal with a satisfied burp.
