‘Clueless (Mets’) Pete (Alonso)’ made tone-deaf mistake this weekend, New York host says

Pete Alonso made a big mistake this weekend, one former New York athlete said Monday. And it had nothing to do with his play on the field.

He should have never hopped on stage with country singer Zach Bryan during a concert at UBS Arena on Saturday night after two losses (that became three in a row on Sunday).

It’s just a bad look, especially with how poorly the Mets played this weekend, former ex-New York Jets QB and NFL MVP Boomer Esiason said on WFAN.

“There was Shoeless Joe, and now there’s Clueless Pete,” Esiason said, via Audacy. “Clueless Pete decides to go to a concert at UBS Arena, which he has every right to do … but if you want to talk about someone who doesn’t understand the big picture and understand what’s going on around here. … Pete, you gotta understand, you’ve had all offseason to screw around, go to parties and go to concerts and do whatever you want, and nobody would say two bits about it, but when you go on stage at a concert on a Saturday night after you lost your first two games, and have a game at 1:40 the next (day), that’s a bad look ... and you’re gonna get roasted for it. ...

“I’m sorry, that’s just not part and parcel to a winning athlete with a winning DNA and somebody that wants to lead their team out of the abyss. Maybe that’s old-school me. But when I saw that, I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’”

Alonso was shown in video clips with Bryan, singing along and having a good time.

It’s easy to bash the slugger after a weekend in which the Mets opened the season 0-3 against the Milwaukee Brewers and were outscored 14-8. But Alonso went 4 for 11 in the series, with two two-hit games in a row to conclude it, so it’s not like it affected his performance.

Can’t the guy have a little fun, too?
