Another year, another record set for New Jersey property taxes.
The average property tax bill for homeowners was $9,803 in 2023, according to recent data posted by the state Department of Community Affairs. That’s an increase from $9,490 in 2022.
The increase has kept pace with inflation, but property taxes in some municipalities are far above New Jersey’s sky-high average.
For 2023, almost half of the towns on our list of the highest property taxes exceed $20,000.
Bergen and Essex County made up the largest share of the entries — with Monmouth, Union and Ocean Counties being represented as well. Here’s the pricey lineup:
30. Fair Haven Borough
This Monmouth County borough came in at $17,453 for 2023. In 2022, it was $16,885.
29. North Caldwell Borough
This Essex County municipality came in at $17,593. In 2022, it was $17,200.
28. Closter Borough
This Bergen County municipality came in at $17,672. It jumped two spots after being slotting as 30 on our list in 2022, when the taxes were $16,806.
27. Westfield town
This Union County municipality came in at just under the 18K mark at $17,926. 2022 was $17,422.
26. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough
This Bergen County municipality came in at $18,264. In 2022, it was $17,697.
25. Maplewood township
This Essex County township average came in at $18,266. In 2022 last year, it was $17,744.
24. Glen Rock Borough
Glen Rock Borough is in Bergen County and came in at $18,391. In 2022, it was $17,766.
23. Allenhurst Borough
This Monmouth County municipality came in at $18,404. In 2022, it was $17,267.
22. Cresskill Borough
This Bergen County Borough came in at $18,536. In 2022, it was $17,961.
21. Woodcliff Lake Borough
Another Bergen County, this municipality came in at $18,550. In 2022, it was $17,341.
20. Franklin Lakes Borough
This Bergen County municipality is $18,565. In 2022, it was $17,944.
19. Summit City
This Union County municipality is at $18,657 for 2023. In 2022, it was $18,244.
18. Upper Saddle River, Borough
This Union County municipality is the on the list to break the 19k mark, at $19,015. It was at $18,384 in 2022.
17. Saddle River Borough
Right behind it’s very similarly named borough and also in Bergen County, it comes in at $19,405. In 2022 it was $18,841.
16. Haworth Borough
This Bergen County Borough is at $19,515. In 2022, it was $18,905.
15. Ridgewood Village
This Bergen County village is at $19,837. In 2022, it was $19,193.
14. Mendham Township
One of the few Morris County entries on the list, this township comes in at $20,325. In 2022, it was $19,850.
13. Essex Fells Borough
This borough comes in at $20,335. In 2022, it was $20,420.
12. South Orange Village Township
This Essex County entry comes in at $21,287. In 2022, it was $20,496.
11. Princeton
This famous Mercer County municipality comes in at $21,372. In 2022, it was $20,539.
10. Montclair
This Essex County municipality comes in at $21,415. In 2022, it was $20,775.
9. Alpine Borough
This Bergen County municipality comes in at $21,699. In 2022, it was $21,169.
8. Deal Borough
The deal that’s been handed to residents in this Monmouth County municipality is $21,741. In 2022, it was $20,197, meaning they dealt with a nearly $500 increase.
7. Mountain Lakes Borough
This Morris County Borough is coming in at $22,441. In 2022, it was $21,861.
6. Rumson Borough
This Monmouth County Borough is coming in at $22,544. In 2022, it was $22,093.
5. Glen Ridge Borough
This Essex County Borough came in at $22,605. In 2022, it was $22,059, a roughly $600 increase.
4. Mantoloking Borough
One of the few Ocean County entries on the list, this borough ranks amongst the top five at $23,021. In 2022, it was $19,330.
3. Tenafly Borough
Roughly within same range as the previous town, this Bergen County borough is at $23,031. In 2022, it was $22,411.
2. Demarest Borough
This Bergen County borough is at $23,475. In 2022, it was $22,636.
1. Millburn Township
Once again topping the list, this Essex County municipality is at $24,947. It bumped up roughly $300 from 2022 where it was $24,623.
* Tavistock Borough
This borough, which is always separated because it’s in a league of its own, was built by people who wanted to golf on Sunday. It’s property tax tab is at $38,206. That’s almost an $8,000 increase from 2022, when it was $29,996.
