Powerball $824.4M jackpot won by single ticket sold in Michigan

The Powerball $824.4 million jackpot for Monday night’s lottery drawing was won by a single ticket sold in Michigan that matched all the winning numbers drawn on New Year’s Day.

The Powerball jackpot, which has a cash option of $452.2 million, is the fifth largest in the game’s history and 10th largest in U.S. lottery history.

The Powerball winning numbers drawn Monday were: 12, 21, 42, 44 and 49. The Powerball drawn was 1, with a Power Play of 3X.

The drawing also had six second prize winning tickets that matched the five white balls drawn, but not the Powerball. Two tickets sold with the Power Play option in Florida and Texas are worth $2 million each, while tickets sold in Connecticut, Florida and Maryland are worth $1 million.

A second-prize ticket sold in California is worth $1,230,788. California’s payouts are determined by ticket sales and are different than the set amounts in other states.

One of the 49 third-prize tickets sold nationally was purchased in New Jersey and is worth $50,000.

Two Powerball tickets worth $200,000 and six worth $50,000 were sold in New Jersey for Saturday night’s drawing. New Jersey lottery officials are expected to reveal the location of those third-prize ticket sales later Tuesday.

The Powerball jackpot win on Monday night was the first time there was a big winner on New Year’s Day since the game started in 1992.

No one had previously hit the jackpot since Oct. 11 when a ticket worth $1.765 billion was bought in Frazier Park, California — about 70 miles north of Los Angeles.

The odds of hitting the Powerball jackpot are 292,201,388 to 1. A player who buys a $2 ticket has about a 1 in 11,688,053 chance to match five numbers and win at least $1 million, while the odds are 913,129 to 1 to win a third prize of at least $50,000.

Powerball drawings are held each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
