Time is quickly running out for filing 2023 tax returns by the deadline.
The last day to file your taxes is on Monday, April 15, 2024 — only two weeks away.
And now that new tax laws have gone into effect for the 2024 filing year, filers will want to know soon how the recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) adjustments to many of the income thresholds that determine the tax brackets affect their 2023 tax returns.
If you’re hoping to file on time and save money, there are multiple software options available that offer free federal tax filing via IRS Free File. The IRS’s partnership with private tax preparation companies has expanded for the 2024 tax season.
The service is open to tax filers with adjusted gross incomes up to $79,000. While some of the companies will charge a fee for filing state tax returns, people who fall under this category will be able to save when filing their federal taxes.
H&R Block and TurboTax might be more commonly known and do offer “free” filing, though the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has found these free filing options are not always actually free.
