Chris Christie, it turns out, spent time and money examining an independent run for president under the “No Labels” ticket. He had polls done in 13 states. He enlisted strategists to study ballot rules across the country. Leaders of the No Labels initiative told people they expected Christie to be their man. This was no flirtation. He came close.

But he pulled the plug last week, saying he feared it might lead the nation to ruin.
