Man shot through N.J. home’s back door, then threatened neighbor, police say

A man who allegedly shot through a Toms River resident’s back door and then threatened another neighbor with a gun was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Officers were called to an Oxford Street home at 10:47 a.m. and were told by a resident that a man banged on his front door while holding a gun, police said. The gunman then went to the back door and the homeowner heard a loud bang, according to a release from the Toms River Police Department. The homeowner told police he ran upstairs to contact them.

Police searched the outside of the home and found a bullet hole in the rear storm door and discovered that the bullet had traveled through it and was lodged in a downstairs interior door, the department said. A shell casing was also found on the back patio.

A short time later, a resident a block away on Irving Place reported that he was threatened with a handgun by a man with a similar description, police said.

The original homeowner told police he knew the man, and identified him as 18-year-old Toms River resident Asheer Johnson, authorities said.

Johnson was later arrested at his home and an unregistered gun was found there and seized, officials said.

He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and multiple weapons-related charges including possession of hollow point bullets, the department said.

An alleged motive was not disclosed. Attorney information for Johnson was not immediately available.
